MERTON LEAVE ALBION HURTIN’

Twigg: Thunderous shot

A limp, lifeless, and lacklustre Albion crashed out of the Surrey Cup with a 3-1 defeat to Merton Rangers.

The travelling Albiones were punished for an insipid display which never sparked into life. Despite the below par performance Albion were leading 1-0 at half time after a thunderous 25-yard drive from Duncan Twigg. The lead was maintained until the 60 minute mark when Rangers equalised.

There was then controversy when a second goal for Albion was ruled out for offside. Jindy Mann swung a freekick into the back post and Abbott’s header beat the keeper in the far corner. However, the Rangers linesman and manager disgracefully raised his flag and the referee disallowed the goal.

With around 10 minutes to go Albion conceded a second when the Rangers forward looped a high ball into the box into the net. With Albion committed to seeking an equaliser Merton scored a late third on the break.
