Football’s worst kept secret can finally be reported as the Albion website can now reveal Dave McPhee as the player who has been using a super-injunction to keep details of his sex life secret.
McPhee’s name has been circulating on social media site Twitter for several weeks in connection with allegations about his private life. However, up till now the Albion website has been prevented from reporting on the story due to a legal gagging order taken out by the midfielder.
McPhee sought the super-injunction to prevent the media reporting that he is in fact a happily married man. It had previously been believed that the Harrogate Makelele was a notorious homosexual and a regular at Clapham’s premier gay bar The Kazbar.
The midfielder is one of the most senior players at the club, establishing and carefully crafting an image for himself as a consummate professional gay. However, this reputation now lies in tatters. with the revelation that he actually in a long term heterosexual relationship, even marrying his partner several years ago.
The news comes as a blow to many Albion supporters who had been big fans of McPhee. Albion’s number one fan, the octogenarian man with a stick, said: “I was disgusted when I heard the news. I thought he was a proper sexual deviant who enjoyed depraved and sordid acts. Now I find that he just got a bread and butter sex life and he’s even married to boot.â€
“Dave has always been my favourite player, watching him play always made me feel like a spritely young man. The magic for me has gone.â€
A player speaking only on the condition of anonymity said: “You share a changing room with a man you think you know him. We all thought he was right bender then you find out he’s hetro. It’s sickening.â€
In a statement released to the media after the story broke McPhee said: “I am relieved that the truth is finally out there. The pressure of leading a double life has, at times, been almost unbearable.
“I hope the football world can accept what I’ve always known about myself – that I’m straight. I hope now the media will now allow my family the privacy to come to terms with this news during this difficult time.â€
