Evans: Claiming an assist for the winner
Albion staged a second half comeback to defeat league leaders De Novo 4-3.
On a postage stamp sized pitch in Wandsworth Albion found themselves behind to an early goal after they failed to deal with the second ball from a De Novo corner and allowed the opposition player to head home from four yards. The small pitch combined with two committed teams meant the first half resembled pinball more than football. Albion were unlucky not to go in at half time ahead after hitting the post twice, possibly three times in the opening 45.
In the second half Albion equalised when Don Thomas raced through on the left hand side before beating the keeper with a shot into the far corner. However, De Novo retook the lead with a spectacular shot into the top corner from 20 yards. Their lead was extended when a shot passed through a crowd of players into the bottom corner.
However, Albion had been creating chances throughout the game with Thomas, Leslie and Evans causing regular problems for the De Novo back four. Albion pulled a goal back when Andy McCue’s pass cut through the defence allowed Duncan Twigg to beat the offside trap and finish with aplomb. With the De Novo appearing to tire Albion took increasingly charge of the game. Albion found the equaliser after some pinball in the 6 yard area where Nick Evans was on hand to stab the ball over the line.
Evans was again involved in winner. A long raking pass by McPhee down the right wing bamboozled the De Novo defence allowing Evans to tear through on goal. His attempted pull back for Leslie hit a defender who was sprawled on the floor and trickled over the line. De Novo were only able to create one chance before the the referee finally blew his whistle.
